Local SEO for Service Businesses: A Practical Guide
Local search is the least competitive high-intent traffic available to most service businesses. Someone searching for a service near them is close to buying, and the ranking factors are largely within your control.
Treat the Business Profile as the primary asset
For local queries, your Google Business Profile matters more than your website. It appears above the organic results, it carries reviews, and for a meaningful share of searches it satisfies the query entirely.
Complete every field. Choose the most specific primary category available rather than a broad one — category selection is one of the strongest map pack signals and one of the most commonly neglected.
Understand what proximity does and does not decide
Physical distance from the searcher is heavily weighted in local results, which means you cannot rank everywhere and should stop trying.
What you can influence is how you rank for people who are nearby. That is decided by relevance — categories, services, on-page content — and prominence: reviews, citations, and general web presence. Focus effort there rather than on ranking across a whole city from one address.
Build reviews as an operational habit
Reviews affect both ranking and conversion, and the pattern matters as much as the count. A steady trickle reads as an operating business; a sudden burst reads as manipulation.
Make it routine:
- Ask at the moment of satisfaction — job completion, checkout, checkout-out.
- Send a direct review link, not instructions to find you.
- Reply to every review, including the negative ones, without defensiveness.
- Never buy reviews. Detection is good and removal takes the ranking with it.
Build location pages that deserve to exist
If you serve several areas, each needs its own page — but a page that only swaps the city name is a doorway page and Google treats it accordingly.
Give each one genuine local substance: work you have done there, landmarks and neighbourhoods you cover, local pricing or timing considerations, testimonials from that area. If you cannot write something specific to a location, you probably should not have a page for it.
Keep citations consistent
Your business name, address and phone number should be byte-identical everywhere — Justdial, Sulekha, IndiaMART, Facebook, industry directories.
Inconsistency is common in India, where businesses accumulate listings over years with slightly different addresses and old phone numbers. Auditing and fixing them is tedious, one-time work with a durable payoff.
Frequently asked
Can I rank locally without a physical address?
Yes, as a service-area business. You hide the address and specify the regions served. You will generally rank less strongly than businesses with a verified address in the searcher's immediate area, so lean harder on reviews and relevance.
How many reviews do I need to compete?
Look at the current map pack for your main query. You need to be in the same range as those three, not at some absolute number. In many categories that means thirty to fifty; in competitive urban ones it can mean several hundred.
