Keyword Research Without Expensive Tools

Paid keyword tools are convenient and mostly sell you volume estimates. The judgements that actually determine whether a keyword is worth targeting are available for free, if you know what to look at.

Start from questions customers already ask

The best keyword list is not discovered in a tool. It is sitting in your sales conversations, WhatsApp messages, support tickets and enquiry forms.

Write down the twenty questions you answer most often before someone buys. These have guaranteed commercial relevance, which is more than any volume estimate can promise.

Expand using the search engine itself

Google gives away most of what a keyword tool sells, if you read the results page properly:

  • Autocomplete — real queries people type, in your language and phrasing.
  • People Also Ask — related questions, expanding as you open them.
  • Related searches at the foot of the page — the adjacent intent cluster.
  • Search Console — queries you already appear for, including many you never targeted.

Judge difficulty by reading the results

Difficulty scores are approximations of something you can assess directly. Search the term and look at page one.

If it is dominated by national brands, marketplaces and major publishers, you will not rank soon. If it contains forums, thin pages, or results that only partly answer the question, there is an opening. A visibly unsatisfying results page is the strongest opportunity signal there is.

Weigh commercial intent over volume

A term with 200 monthly searches from people ready to buy is worth more than one with 20,000 from people writing school assignments.

Two quick checks: are there ads on the results page — advertisers pay for intent, so ads indicate commercial value — and would someone searching this plausibly buy within a month? If not, it is a content play, not a revenue one, and should be budgeted accordingly.

Map keywords to pages, one to one

Group keywords by intent and assign each group to a single page. Two pages targeting the same intent compete with each other and split whatever authority you have.

The map becomes your content plan: existing page, needs improvement, or needs writing. That is a more useful artefact than a spreadsheet of five hundred keywords nobody will ever act on.

Frequently asked

Are keyword volume numbers accurate?

They are rough estimates, often wrong by a wide margin for Indian regional terms, and they exclude the long tail entirely. Use them for relative comparison between keywords, never as a forecast of traffic.

Should I target Hindi or English keywords?

Follow your customers. Search the term both ways and see what ranks and how the results differ. Many Indian categories show high Hinglish usage in speech but English in typed search, so test rather than assume.
