Digital Marketing for Hotels and Resorts: Filling Rooms Profitably

Hospitality has a specific economic problem: online travel agencies deliver volume and take 15–25% of it. Most marketing decisions for an independent property come back to shifting that mix.

Understand the billboard effect before fighting it

Guests routinely discover a property on an OTA, then search for it directly to compare. That means OTAs perform a genuine discovery function you would otherwise pay for.

The goal is not to leave them but to capture the guests they introduce you to. Every guest who finds you on Booking.com and books direct is a full commission saved on a customer the OTA effectively delivered.

Make direct booking the obviously better choice

Rate parity limits undercutting on price, but value is not only price. Make the direct option visibly superior in ways OTAs cannot match:

  • Free upgrades or early check-in when available, guaranteed only on direct bookings.
  • A welcome inclusion — breakfast, a drink, an experience — bundled at no extra cost.
  • Flexible cancellation that is genuinely more generous than the OTA terms.
  • A booking engine that is fast on mobile, since a poor one sends people straight back.

When someone searches your property by name, they have already decided. If an OTA outranks you, or bids on your name, you pay commission on a booking you had already won.

Bid on your own brand terms, keep the Business Profile complete with a direct booking link, and make sure your site ranks first organically. This is usually the highest-return spend in a hotel's entire marketing budget.

Photograph the experience, not the furniture

Room photographs are table stakes and largely interchangeable. What sells a stay is the thing the guest cannot get elsewhere — the courtyard at dusk, the view at breakfast, the specific texture of the place.

For heritage and boutique properties in Rajasthan especially, this is the entire differentiator. Shoot in real conditions with real light, and prioritise vertical video, which is where discovery now happens.

Plan around the demand calendar

Hospitality demand is highly seasonal and largely predictable, so the marketing calendar should be built backwards from it.

Spend on demand capture during peak booking windows, when people are actively searching. Spend on demand creation in the shoulder months, when you are trying to make people consider a trip they had not planned. Running the same always-on campaign year-round wastes budget in both directions.

Frequently asked

What percentage of bookings should be direct?

Independent properties that market well typically reach 30–50% direct. Below 20% means you are effectively operating as an OTA supplier, with the margin that implies.

Is it worth advertising on Instagram for a hotel?

Yes, but for consideration rather than immediate booking. Hospitality has a long decision cycle, so measure assisted conversions and branded search lift rather than expecting last-click bookings from a discovery ad.
